Reasons Why Your Aquarium Plants May Be Dying

Live aquarium plants can be a beautiful addition to an aquarium, whether you have it stocked with fish or not. But many aquarium owners who have trouble keeping their plants alive finally give up populate their aquarium with artificial plants. But keeping your plants alive and healthy is not really that difficult if you know what they like and need. Here are some of the main reasons that aquarium plants end up dying or not thriving well.

Failing to provide enough light for your plant. Light is extremely important for a plant. You can provide a plant with buckets of food and nutrients, but if you don’t give it enough light, it won’t last long. Now these days, most of the tanks that you find will come with a light attached to the tank top. Alternatively, it will come with pre-drilled holes that have been setup to allow you to install a light relatively easily. If not, most acrylic tanks will allow you to drill your own holes and set up your own lighting. Of course, another perfectly good alternative is simply to place your aquarium on the south side of your apartment or house, near a window where it will be sure to get plenty of light.

Not paying attention to your plant’s roots. If the plant is a new one, the brown leaves may be nothing more than the plant adjusting to it’s new home. Most plants experience some sort of shock when transplanted from one place to another. It’s nothing unusual. Just give it a bit of time to adjust and it should do fine. However, if your plant is an established plant and has been doing fine for a long time but suddenly the leaves start to turn brown and fall off – the roots may simply have come loose from the soil or gravel. It’s not unusual for roots to come loose in aquariums, especially if you have fish that love to dig. In this case, simply replant or reposition the plant making sure that the roots are well covered and secure.

Too many plants for the space. Plants are alive and need room to grow. In the closed confines of an aquarium, it’s easy to have a crowded aquarium. You have too many plants fighting for too few resources. Give your plants plenty of room to grow by providing it with a large enough aquarium to accommodate it’s future growth spurts. If it starts to get a bit unwieldy, it also helps to trim it every once in a while to control it’s growth.

The wrong plant in the wrong environment. Plants are living things. And like all living things they do better in some environments than in others. You may have fallen in love with the most perfect, beautiful tropical plant to your eyes. But, if you live in the northern part of Alaska, chances are your plant is not going to survive. Many times the cause of a dying plant can be traced directly back to it not being right for the environment it has been moved to.

Many times the poor performance of a plant is where it was purchased. It’s not unusual to discover that most animal and fish stores are set up to deal with animals, not plants. To many of them, plants are simply a side line. If you notice that a store has only a few types of plants for sale and a rather small stock, it’s a good guess that they aren’t very knowledgeable about the types of plants that will do well in your environment. Also, if most of the store’s plants are yellowing or brown, or if the plants seem to be not well cared for, it’s probably best to continue to look elsewhere. The last thing that you want to do is to introduce a diseased plant into your aquarium.

Home Improvements In Missouri – Upgrade Your Home with Siding

As the second major snowstorm of the season covers the state of Missouri in a blanket of snow, you cant help but wonder if it will ever end. The rolling meadows and grassy fields are far from sight beneath layer upon layer of snow. Dont give up hope. In just a few months, the beautiful weather will return. It will then be time to revisit that list of home improvement projects from last year. One of the most cost-effective upgrades to any home is replacing the siding. Your home is your largest investment. Why not improve its look and value simultaneously with new siding?

There are many businesses that offer this service. The best place to begin is to get referrals from trusted friends. Talk to your neighbors and find out who installed their siding. Additionally, you could perform a search online to find reputable contractors in your area. After you choose the company, obtain an estimate including all costs and labor. Make sure you get this in writing, so they are not able to make any changes later on during the job. It is customary to pay fifty percent of the cost up front and then the remaining amount when the installation is complete. That way, should there be any complications, you will have the upper hand.

When choosing the style of your new siding, be aware of the many options available on the market nowadays. Vinyl siding is very popular due to the array of colors and styles. It is, for the most part, maintenance-free and will last for years to come. Additionally, when a layer of insulation is added, your vinyl siding becomes an energy-efficient choice. Missouri residents can also benefit from polymer seamless siding. One piece can extend the entire length of the home, thus eliminating unsightly cracks and seams. Manufactured in Missouri, this material looks beautiful after installation is complete.

Other product choices include:

Log cabin siding
Shingle siding
Shake siding
Vinyl stone or rock siding
Vinyl brick siding

No matter which look is chosen, it is sure to increase your homes curb appeal. Log cabin vinyl siding is the perfect selection for those who prefer the outdoors. Shingle siding is beautifully crafted from cedar and will give your home a look of sophistication. If you prefer stone, then vinyl stone looks magnificent. Whichever vinyl siding you choose, it will maintain its beauty for many years.

The Best Flowering Plants for the Office

Flowering plants and trees don’t always do well in an office environment because many commercial facilities lack the natural light required to produce healthy blooms. Although many types of green plants do well with limited amounts of light, it is much more difficult to find flowering varieties. Adding plants to your office has many known benefits, most notably the positive psychological effect they have on your staff. Plants also help purify the air and take the edge off the sterile feel that’s common to many facilities. If you would like to add flowering trees or plants to your business, consider the following varieties.

The Peace Lily

Peace lilies are known for their ability to clean the air around them, filtering it of formaldehyde and carbon monoxide, as well as for producing dramatic white blossoms and shiny, dark-green leaves. As long as the soil stays fairly moist, the peace lily can tolerate even the dimmest of office spaces.

Shamrock Plant

One of the hardier blooming plants, the shamrock produces delicate white flowers from green, purple or silver foliage. The shamrock plant’s most notable feature is that it is virtually impossible to kill. If it doesn’t get enough water, it simply goes dormant. If that happens, remove any dead leaves, repot the plant and water it regularly.

Freckle Face or Polka Dot Plant

Although this variety does not truly produce flowers, it does feature brightly-colored pink spots on its leaves. The main advantage to the polka dot plant is that lower amounts of light produce more color on the leaves. In a windowless office, all the foliage may turn bright fuchsia.

Christmas Cactus

This is a great plant for the office environment because spending several hours in darkness each night will keep it blooming. The Christmas cactus comes in pink, white and traditional red varieties and requires little water.

African Violet

Much like the Christmas cactus, African violets do best when they are neglected. These petite plants are highly adaptable and produce flowers that range from pale blue to vivid purple. New varieties are available with pink, white or variegated blossoms.

Bromeliads

Bromeliads are becoming popular for both indoor and outdoor use, thanks to their easy care and low water requirements. These beautiful specimens come in a vast array of sizes and colors, producing blooms that range from yellow to burgundy.

Although each of the plant species listed here is relatively easy to grow, business owners may not care to invest the time, money and effort required to keep indoor plants healthy and blooming. One alternative is to engage the services of an interior landscape company. For a modest monthly fee, these companies will not only stage your office with plants, they will also make weekly visits to water and maintain the plants. This way, you won’t have to worry about killing your plants or spend any time on their upkeep. If a plant becomes distressed or starts to die, the plant service simply removes it and replaces it with a healthy specimen.

Because their technicians are trained in all matters related to plant care, they know exactly how to prune, fertilize and care for the plants they provide. The results are impressive, and your staff will benefit in a variety of ways. Whether you choose to do it yourself or hire a plant service, consider adding flowering plants to your office this year.

Low Maintenance Gardens

Gardening consumers are always looking for low maintenance. Plants and shrubs they can just put in the ground and forget about. That process does not exist. There are plants and shrubs that require less care than others, however. What makes a garden low maintenance?

Creating low maintenance gardens first takes some thought. What may be a chore to you may be a joy to another. Think of the things you enjoy doing in your garden and expand from there. If you don’t enjoy raking leaves, plant evergreens. If you don’t like pruning, plant slow growing shrub material. If you don’t like planting annual flowers every year, plant perennials.

Researching plants growth habits is very important for a low maintenance garden. You’ll want to choose plants that grow slowly and require little pruning. A formal garden is not a good choice for low maintenance. Perennials are a great way to add color to your garden. They come back bigger and better each year with little effort on your part.

Another way to make your garden low maintenance is the way you fertilize. A good organic fertilizer usually gets applied less frequently than a chemical fertilizer. For example, the famous liquid blue fertilizer recommends feeding once per week throughout the growing season. Definitely not low maintenance! Organic fertilizers can be applied as little as twice per season. Once in spring and once in fall (depending on variety). They generally have a slow release and last much longer with better nutrient quality and uptake.

Using good quality garden tools can also make your garden less work. Good, sharp tools will make your jobs easier and take less time.

Mulching your garden in the spring is a must. It is work, however, once it is done it will save you time and money. You will save time weeding because the mulch will keep the weed seeds from germinating and you will save money on your water bill because the mulch helps to retain moisture around the plants.

All gardens need food and water to survive. There are many plants that are drought tolerant once established. This does not mean they never need watering. It means they can tolerate dryer conditions.

Planning is the key to a good low maintenance garden. Once your garden is planted, using the proper tools and fertilizers will minimize work.

Residential Architecture Trends for Fort Worth New Homes

The Fort Worth new home outlook 2011 appears brighter as more builders are getting the lending they need to build more homes. The Fort Worth new home outlook 2011 is decidedly different than it was just a few years ago. In particular, home buyers arent looking for the extravagant homes of the past and are instead focused on beautiful, but practical, living spaces, and the architecture trends clearly reflect this.

When looking at the Fort Worth new home outlook 2011 there are a number of architectural trends that seem to be repeating themselves. They are:

The Fort Worth new home outlook 2011 calls for smaller, more modest homes. This trend certainly comes as no surprise, as home buyers simply arent looking for over-the-top homes like they were a few years ago. This means those extra rooms, such as billiard rooms, wine rooms and home theaters are not in demand much anymore when it comes to Fort Worth, Texas real estate.

The Fort Worth new home outlook 2011 still calls for open spaces. Todays new homes dont have the plethora of walls like their older counterparts. Instead, homebuyers are looking for flowing floor plans that feature central gathering spaces, such as large kitchens and great rooms.

Ceilings are becoming lower once again. The trend in new homes just a few years ago were large spaces with soaring ceilings. Todays homebuyers, however, are looking for more intimate spaces, and that often means lowering the ceilings. You will find plenty of Carrollton real estate new home options that reflect this trend.

Sliding barn doors are replacing swinging doors, thereby allowing the homeowner to better configure the space to his or her needs. For example, sliding barn doors are often used to separate a living and dining space that, when entertaining, will be opened up to allow guests to mingle.

Single-level living is gaining steam regarding the Fort Worth new home outlook 2011. This is likely because many buyers are building their dream home later in life and want an easily accessible, single-level home that eliminates the need to climb steps. It is quite common, therefore, to see any number of single-level homes in new neighborhoods. From the garage into the laundry room, mud room and kitchen, buyers of today want to be able to move freely throughout the home, without any hindrances, and single-level homes accomplish this.

Architecture plans for todays new homes take into consideration home buyers desire for outdoor living. Expect to see decks, porches, patios and the like considered in new homes.

Ease of use still reigns supreme when it comes to new homes, so large, eat-in kitchens with center islands and plenty of space for cabinetry is still quite popular, as are first-floor laundry rooms. Its really all about convenience and practicality when it comes to the Fort Worth new home outlook 2011. Homebuyers arent giving up quality of craftsmanship, mind you, they are just eliminating those extra features that never really seemed practical and instead just seemed excessive.
